Good evening Newfield families.
This is Vicky Volpicelli with Newfield Central School District.  I am emailing to let you  know that the Tompkins County Health Department has declared a state of emergency throughout the county due to the COVID-19 outbreak.  While Tompkins County has no confirmed cases, there are confirmed cases in multiple counties in NYS so the Health Department believes it is inevitable we will see cases here in Tompkins County.  The Health Department has been working diligently with community partners to plan and respond to this emerging issue, but at this time it is necessary to take additional action to protect the health and well-being of our community.
All schools in Tompkins County will be closed beginning Monday, March 16 through Friday, April 10.  At this point, classes will resume on Monday, April 13. This decision has been made for several reasons:
  • To slow the potential spread of disease among groups of students in confined spaces.
  • To protect vulnerable populations, including older adults, those who are immune-compromised, or have chronic medical conditions.
  • To promote social distancing: putting space between yourself and others, limiting large gatherings, and refraining from handshakes and hugs.
We as a district are working with teachers to continue instruction during this time.  All teaching staff will report to school as previously scheduled.  Bagels and coffee will be served beginning at 7:40 in the Food Court and we begin promptly at 8:00 am in the auditorium.
Please look forward for future communication for updates on the Newfield website or through SchoolMessenger.
Thank you and have a great weekend.
